Journey to nowhere

Composed from the cycle Poems of the papers reached for a wandering forest bugle: Songs of life and love (1824) by the poet Wilhem Muller (1884-27), which contains the first twelve poems appeared in 1823 under the title Winter Journey, this cycle is considered one of the zenith of the liederistic genre and the production of Franz Schubert. Director Rafael R. Villalobos – emerging talent that sounds more and more strong in the operatic scene – dares to stage this seemingly anti-theatrical – even if with great dramatic charge – cycle in a proposal inspired by Samuel Beckett’s theatre, which delves into the most hidden corners of the human soul. Thus, a man waiting patiently for a lover who left him a long time ago, is the starting point for this emotional tour-de-force for the performer – in this case the countertenor Xavier Sabata in his debut at the Festival, accompanied to the piano by Francisco Poyato- who undertakes through music Schubert and the words of Müller his personal winter journey in search of himself and acceptance of his own loneliness and who, at the same time, invites us to reflect on one of the taboos of our society: mental health.
