Death in exile

The year 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Josep Carner in Brussels in exile. Born in 1884 at the street number 8 Aribau, right next to the University of Barcelona, it was in this study center where he discovered Catalanism. He is one of the most prolific poets in the Catalan language, publishing one book per year and making reference translations of Dickens, Shakespeare, Mark Twain or Molière, among others. With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, he was one of the few diplomats who remained faithful to the government of the Republic, a fact that led to his exile in 1939, first to Mexico and then to Brussels, where he died thirty-one years later. In addition to his literary production, he also highlighted the one linked to music: he wrote the booklet El giravolt de maig by Eduard Toldrà, a composer with whom he established an interesting artistic partnership, since many of his songs are with his lyrics, such as Menta i farigola, Canticel or Cançó incerta. In addition, all of them later became part of Victoria de los Ángeles’ recitalistic repertoire. In collaboration with the Castell de Peralada Festival -where this summer some of Carner’s music cycles are premiered- we offer this recital with some absolute premieres on verses by the poet and music by Antoni Ros Marbà, Antoni Parera Fons and Francesc Prat, as well as the cycles already premiered in Peralada by Albert Guinovart and Alberto García Demestres.
