Travelling with songs

English baritone Christopher Maltman, who debuted at LIFE Victoria in 2018, returns to the Festival with this program focused on Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel, the atmospheric cycle of nine songs composed between 1900 and 1904 about Robert Louis Stevenson’s poems Songs of Travel and other verses published in 1896. This collection of songs represents the composer’s first foray into the Lied field and, unlike Schubert’s Winterreise walker or other similar cycles, the protagonist of Songs of Travel is not authorized to subjugate nature, but rather the struggle to leave human beings triumphant. A more modern view of travel, as a result of the modernity provided by technique and industrialization, and representing an overcoming of popium Romanticism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is one of the most famous cycles of the English liederistic repertoire, as beautifully interesting as it is not programmed here, of which Maltman is one of its most outstanding exponents.
