Schubert’s Three Great Cycles

If 2020 will be the first year in which a Winterreise will be held at the Festival, 2021 will be the first in which Schubert’s three main cycles will be performed consecutively: Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, and Schwanengesang. For this project, which represents an important step for LIFE Victoria, we have pianist James Baillieu, who offers these three cycles in a week along with three tenors of luxury and reference in the genre: Julian Prégardien, Mark Padmore and Jan Petryka, who debut all three in the Festival. If anything brings these three song cycles into the concept of travel, both physical and spiritual, that’s precisely life victoria’s line this year. In Die schöne Müllerin (The beautiful miller), the lover enters this emotional journey through the countryside and forest, with the stream as a confidant of his tortured soul. Winterreise (The journey of winter), embodies for himself the emotional journey per antonomasia, that of a reciprocated unrequited love and the consequent desolation. While Schwanengesang (The swan song) represents in itself the end of the journey, it was Schubert’s Lieder collection that was published on a supermously.
