The Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation today received the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts granted by the Ministry of Culture to 37 institutions and cultural personalities who have excelled in the field of artistic and cultural creation.
The award ceremony, held at the Royal Artillery Factory in Seville, was presided over by Their Majesties the King and Queen and featured the participation of the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, the President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and the Mayor of Seville.
The Ministry of Culture has recognized the Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation with this distinction for having organized “with great public success, as well as with a significant national and international impact, the commemoration of the centenary of the birth of the soprano Victoria de los Ángeles” and highlighted its mission to “apreserve and disseminate the soprano’s legacy with the aim that the vital and artistic testimony of the person and the singer remain alive, as well as to train future generations of musicians following the artist’s example.”
In 1991, Victoria de los Ángeles was honored with this same Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts; three decades later, this award once again honors the soprano.
Helena Mora, president of the Foundation, received the distinction and stated that “it is a great honor for us to receive this medal in recognition of the events organized by the Foundation for the celebration of the Victoria de los Ángeles centenary, and it represents the ideal culmination of this year full of events in her memory.”
For his part, Marc Busquets, curator of the centenary, declared that this distinction “represents the highest institutional recognition by the Government for the work done during this ‘Victoria de los Ángeles Year’, which has served to bring her figure closer to all citizens. Undoubtedly, there is a before and after this centenary, although the work of preserving and disseminating her legacy, as well as supporting young talent, continues from the Foundation.”
In addition to this award, the commemoration of the Victoria de los Ángeles centenary has been declared an Event of Exceptional Public Interest by the Government of Spain.
The Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation will receive two other awards for its work in the coming days: the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation Medal and the 2024 Ópera Actual Award.
