Shakespeare’s Retirement

The final years of William Shakespeare’s life were marked by a return: after decades at the heart of London’s theatrical life, the playwright gradually withdrew to Stratford-upon-Avon, distancing himself from the stage that had made his work universal. Though not a political exile, this departure can be understood as a form of withdrawal from the world that had shaped his artistic identity. This programme, conceived by Nicky Spence and Dylan Pérez, brings together composers from almost three centuries who have carried his texts even further afield. From Haydn and Schubert to Britten, Tippett and Dankworth, Shakespeare’s verses leave the Elizabethan stage to be reborn in a wide variety of musical languages. The songs evoke displaced characters, separated lovers, shipwrecked figures and those searching for a place in which to rebuild themselves—recurring themes in works such as Twelfth Night, As You Like It, The Tempest and Cymbeline. An ingenious programme for the tenor’s return to LIFE Victoria, where he gave a striking performance of Diary of One Who Disappeared in 2020.
