Wandering the World
Since its composition in 1823, Franz Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin has become one of the foundational masterpieces of the Lied repertoire, yet it has only been performed once at LIFE Victoria: in 2021 with Ilker Arcayürek and James Baillieu. In this cycle, the outward journey of a young wanderer gradually becomes an inner journey shaped first by desire and hope, and later by disappointment and solitude. The figure of the wanderer—a recurring presence in the Romantic imagination—becomes a metaphor for the constant search for one’s place in the world. Mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston and pianist Sholto Kynoch, who appeared together before the LIFE Victoria audience in 2025, offer a new perspective on this masterpiece. Far from being merely a story of unrequited love, Die schöne Müllerin raises questions that continue to resonate today: uprootedness, the need for belonging, and the fragility of the individual in the face of a world that often seems indifferent to their desires. Within the framework of LIFE Victoria’s season devoted to exile and displacement, the protagonist of the cycle emerges as a universal figure.
