Two Faces of Exile
With this programme, pianist Kunal Lahiry, who was also a LIFE Victoria Artist-in-Residence in 2023–24, reflects on the idea of exile through a dialogue between two musical voices separated by almost a century: Sergei Rachmaninoff and Luciano Berio. Composed in 1896, Rachmaninoff’s Moments musicaux still belong to the Russian Romantic tradition. Yet, heard in the light of the composer’s biography, they acquire a particular dimension. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Rachmaninoff left his homeland permanently and spent the rest of his career away from his native country. Alongside these pieces, Berio’s Six Encores emerge as brief spaces for contemplation. Written over a period of twenty-five years, these miniatures explore ever-changing soundscapes, suggesting a world in constant motion. Berio does not approach exile as the loss of a place, but rather as a displacement between languages, memories, and ways of listening.
