Physical Exile: Lotte Lenya, from Vienna to Hollywood
This recital takes the figure of singer and actress Lotte Lenya, Kurt Weill’s muse and life partner, as its guiding thread, tracing a musical journey shaped by exile. The journey begins in early twentieth-century Vienna, one of the great centres of European modernity, where composers such as Gustav Mahler, Alma Mahler, Dora Pejačević and Arnold Schoenberg forged a new, free and deeply innovative musical language. This creative flourishing was cut short by war and the rise of fascism, which forced many artists to leave Europe. Like Lotte Lenya, numerous composers found refuge in the United States, turning exile into both a personal and artistic experience. Hanns Eisler’s songs, setting texts by Bertolt Brecht, express displacement and hope with striking intensity, while Kurt Weill’s later works lead us into the world of cabaret and the Hollywood that Lenya eventually made her own. A journey in which music becomes memory, resistance and refuge. Mireia Tarragó and Victoria Guerrero, a longstanding duo, make their LIFE Victoria debut together.
Lieder ofGustav Mahler (1860–1911), Alma Mahler (1879–1964), Dora Pejačević (1885–1923) and Arnold Schönberg (1874–1951).
