A Piano Revelation
Some exiles cross borders, while others dwell in memory—within each composer and their life story. In this recital, Daniel Bertomeu explores three ways of understanding distance: travel as discovery, memory as refuge, and loss as transformation. In Après une lecture de Dante, Franz Liszt transforms the journey into a spiritual experience that transcends physical movement. Frederic Mompou’s Scènes d’enfants evoke childhood through the delicacy of remembrance, as though time itself were a form of exile. Finally, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No. 2 unfolds a world of extraordinary intensity, shaped by nostalgia and by the search for a distinctive artistic voice that the composer preserved even after his forced exile from his native Russia. This piano recital also marks Daniel Bertomeu’s LIFE Victoria debut. At just seventeen years of age, he promises to be one of the season’s most exciting discoveries.
